Project Description: Community Legal Aid's CORI and Reentry Project helps individuals obtain, evaluate, and seal eligible charges, and also addresses the legal barriers that prevent formerly incarcerated individuals from getting back on their feet. This is a general practice that encompasses many areas of law, including housing, employment, licensing, family law, and public benefits. The Project also educates the public by hosting trainings and workshops for the community and for employers and housing providers.
Role of the Intern: Interns will assist the Project attorney in several areas. Students eligible to practice under SJC Rule 3:03 may have opportunities to represent clients in court and/or administrative proceedings, but should be aware that the frequency of such opportunities is not necessarily consistent or predictable. Some of the tasks interns can expect to assist with include:
Evaluating Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) to determine eligibility of charges for sealing;
Preparing and filing petitions to seal, both administratively by mail and through a judicial hearing process;
Drafting memoranda for Motions for Reconsideration for denied petitions to seal;
Engaging in outreach efforts by planning know-your-rights trainings and CORI clinics for the public;
Evaluating various rental assistance housing programs' rules and regulations to determine applicants' rights with respect to CORI-based denials;
Gathering documentation and drafting letters of support from professionals to support housing application denials due to CORI;
Interviewing clients;
Identifying housing providers and employers who would be interested in receiving trainings on individual's rights as they relate to criminal records; and
Preparing for administrative agency hearings and court proceedings.
