Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of Central and Western Massachusetts. CLA has over 140 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.

CLA seeks a part-time, temporary Parent Advocate who will be part of a team launching a new grant-funded project to assist parents who are involved with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF). The goal of this project is to ensure that families get the help they need addressing issues of concern to DCF so that DCF does not remove the children from the home. This project aims to keep children safe with their families, minimize the emotional trauma caused by removal, and allow the foster care system to focus its resources on children who truly need its protection.

The advocate will be a member of CLA's interdisciplinary advocacy team and will work with a case manager and attorney to assist parents in the community. The advocate will work on a part-time basis out of CLA's Springfield office for the period of one year. The advocate will provide mentorship to parents; help identify family needs and barriers; connect parents with appropriate resources; and ensure families follow up with resources.

QUALIFICATIONS: We seek an individual who has had direct, first-hand experience in successfully negotiating the DCF system on their own behalf in the past. Applicants must be highly committed to using their knowledge to help other parents involved in the DCF system. The individual should have familiarity with community resources; experience working with persons in crisis; the ability to work collaboratively, establish rapport, and motivate others towards achieving goals; and excellent communication skills. High school degree or equivalency preferred. Fluency in Spanish preferred.

Please submit cover letter and resume to: avaughan@cla-ma.org or mail to Alicia Vaughan, Human Resources Director, Community Legal Aid, 405 Main Street, Worcester, Massachusetts 01608. CLA is an Equal Opportunity Employer and strives to ensure that our staff members reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. CLA encourages applicants from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
